Superb authentic Gascon 'chateau' with chapel dating from the 11th century on grounds and land of 6,7 acres (2.5 hectares) situated in an elevated position close to Auch, capital of Gascony.
- Chateau & Prestige
The original tower of this superb, authentic Gascon 'Chateau' dates from around the 11th century. The chapel is also thought to date from a similar period with the main part of this fabulous building dating from the 15th century. King Henri IV of France is believed to have stopped here on his frequent journies from Navarre to Nerac, hence the name of the spring on the property known as 'The King's Fountain'! The dressed stone, architectural features and style are very typical of the region and those periods and share common features with D'Artagnan's chateau further to the west, as well as with several others well-known in Gascony! In an elevated position the chateau enjoys good views over the countryside whilst being only a few minutes' drive from the city of Auch, capital of the Gers and Gascony. Situated only an hour from Toulouse with its international airport, this amazing property is very easy to access whilst enjoying peace and quiet.
The chateau sits on 2.5 hectares (6.7 acres) of grounds which comprise beautiful, terraced gardens with orchard, well and the aforementioned spring. The grounds are stunning in the simplicty of their layout with their mature trees, stone walls and steps. Beyond the walls of the grounds are the chateau's fields laid to organic arable crops (currently planted with golden wheat).
The sophisticated simplicity continues when one enters this beautiful building. The main front door leads on to an entrance hall from which a lovely stone staircase rises. To one side is a salon with grand stone fireplace which one enters through a reception room with library. The period features such as traditional clay tile (tommette) floor, wooden beams with stone corbels and lattice windows with authentic wooden internal shutters have been lovingly restored and maintained. This salon can connect through an internal door with the chapel.
The kitchen also has lovely period features rendering the space elegant with its good proportions and high ceiling. The kitchen is simple but functional and could be developed into an incredible space.
On the first floor are four bedrooms, all with fireplaces, a salon-library and two bathrooms. All rooms are of good sizes with excellent ceiling height and period features such as panelling, tiled floors and elegant stone work.
On the second floor are four further bedrooms, a spacious games and play room, shower room and attic space under the exceptional chapel roof. This chateau is ideal for hosting family and friends!
The chateau is in good order. The roof has been recently re-done, as has the electrical installation, external shutters, guttering, drainage installation and rain water evacuation system. Great care and attention to detail has been taken with the work over the years. There is however plenty of scope internally for you to add your own personal touch, particularly decoratively, as well as in the grounds with a swimming pool, for example.
The chapel is a beautiful stone edifice with remnants of original features such as the finely decorated plaster work. Ornamented on either side by traditional cast iron chrisms, the chapel has retained its function having been regularly used by the family for ceremonial purposes over the years.
Stone outbuildings (former stables and barn) complete the property. In good order these could be developed further, or are ideal for housing cars and storing machinery.
